AVID - 6th Grade (Period 1,5)

Course Description

Welcome to our 6th grade AVID course at El Sereno Middle School. My name is Ms. Siggins and I am excited to start your middle school journey with you! Please see the course description below and the attached syllabus. Looking forward a fun and successful semester with you all.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is an elective college preparatory system that prepares students to attend a four-year college/university upon high school graduation. It is an elective course where students receive additional scaffolded academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in the school’s most rigorous courses. AVID focuses on 11 core strategies known as WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading). The WICOR strategies used are backed by research and proven to work to support students. The philosophy of AVID is not simply to help students be college ready, but to make them competitive by helping them close the opportunity gap so they can be prepared for a higher education, careers, and life. Utilizing the 6 C’s of a 21st Century Learner and AVID/WICOR strategies, students will experience success in a safe and inviting atmosphere. Students will develop academic, social, and emotional strategies and skills including technological literacy and will develop as learners in accord with the IB ATLs (Approaches to Learning) and Learner Profiles.
